Some of you might have already received their precious 13th month pay. In the coming weeks, the awaited Christmas bonus will also be given by your dear employers. As early as now, you’re already starting to feel the Christmas rush. Your bookish self is already lusting for books that you can buy from your hard-earned money. Though you may feel guilty for buying books and not reading them, and you want to buy an e-reader first to be on the safe side.
I’m sure that some of you already know that Amazon recently released the 4th generation of their most popular e-reading device—Kindle Paperwhite 4. With waterproof functionality, bigger storage, more LED lights, and convenient Audible integration, I’m sure it’s worth the investment. Maybe you’ve been saving up for a new e-reader. Maybe you just want an upgrade to the newest technology available. Or maybe you just want to explore what e-book reading feels like on e-ink. Whatever the reason, this post will guide you in buying the covetous Kindle Paperwhite 4 straight from Amazon.com.
First of all, Amazon can directly ship the All-New Kindle Paperwhite 4 (International Version) to the Philippines. However, I wouldn’t suggest buying and shipping it directly because our country has a problematic customs operation. You might be charged a higher fee when you go through that method. Hence, I suggest you to try this shopping trick instead.
Create a Virtual US Address
Before heading to Amazon’s home page, visit Johnny Air Cargo’s (JAC) website first to create an account. JAC is a third-party courier and it is the service you will be using in this scheme. You might need some valid identification cards, so please make sure you have them prepared. I’ve used JAC several times to ship my Amazon orders to the Philippines—“bypassing” the customs. They currently offer 50% off in the handling fee for new customers, so that is something you can use for this purpose. After creating an account, go to their “How to Ship” page to choose what virtual US address you will be using for Amazon. I often use their Los Angeles address, and I never had a problem with shipping.
Buy the Paperwhite 4 on Amazon.com
After deciding which address to use, you can copy the contact details and paste it to a notepad. Afterwards, go to Amazon.com, buy the Kindle Paperwhite 4, and proceed to checkout. In the Shipping Address section of the checkout, make sure to put the following contact details assuming you have chosen the LA address:
JAC PLUS / (your name)
153 South Vermont Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90004
(213) 386 7080
Make sure not to put your Philippine address in the shipping address field.
Review the information you entered and pay your order. Make sure to keep a copy of your receipt sent via e-mail. Amazon will send the order number there which you will use later on. Also, Amazon provides tracking numbers to customers when their items have been shipped. It would be very helpful if you track the location of your item from time to time.
Send JAC an E-Mail
Right after placing your order on Amazon.com, send JAC an e-mail to this address [email protected] regarding your order details. Make sure to include your Amazon order number and other details.
This is the e-mail template I use for this purpose:
Dear Johnny Air Cargo team,
I ordered this item from Amazon: “NAME OF PRODUCT” and had it shipped to your Los Angeles branch.
Here are the further details about my order:
JAC PLUS / (YOUR NAME)
153 South Vermont Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90004
(213) 386 7080
Date of Order:
Expected date of arrival to your LA office: MM/DD/2018
Branch: SM Megamall
Or let them know if you want it to be delivered to your doorstep (Metro Manila only). They charge additionally for this.
Please notify me once it arrives. Thank you.
Expect an e-mail from a JAC staff member regarding your Amazon order. Usually, you will receive a confirmation e-mail in one to two business days.
Wait for Your Paperwhite 4 to Arrive
Continuously track your order on your Amazon.com account. Once the tracking number finally shows up, make sure to send it to JAC so that they can anticipate its arrival to their LA office.
At this juncture, you really can’t do anything but wait. Usually, orders like Kindle devices arrive seven to ten days after you ordered them from Amazon. However, your package may take a while to arrive since it’s holiday season.
After some time, someone from JAC will send a text message once the item is ready to pick up at your chosen branch. They will also indicate how much the shipping fee costs. When I bought my Kindle Paperwhite 3 in 2016, I was only charged PHP 986. Not bad, isn’t it?
Just a Caveat
Using this method may be the most preferred by Filipinos when shopping on Amazon.com. I can’t really blame them since Amazon doesn’t have a Philippine store yet. However, this scheme comes with a drawback.
Your Kindle Paperwhite 4 or any Amazon product comes with a warranty that you can take advantage of should it malfunction. In some instances, Amazon will refund or replace the item you ordered. But since you will be using a third-party courier or a freight forwarder, the warranty of the product you ordered might not be usable after all. The warranty will not be voided per se, but you just can’t use it. If Amazon requests to return the malfunctioning/damaged item to them, you have to coordinate with JAC first. If they issue you a replacement for your Paperwhite 4, they will only send it to the address in which it was originally delivered—JAC’s address. However, that would be okay, too if you don’t mind paying for another shipping fee and repeating this entire process.
In my experience, I did not have problems with my orders from Amazon using this scheme. The devices I bought there are still working fine. However, just in case you ran into a problem, keep in mind that the caveat above applies for shipped items via freight forwarders.
I know that you’re excited to do your holiday reading near the pool or beach with your waterproof Paperwhite 4. There might be some vendors on Lazada selling the Kindle Paperwhite 3, but why would you settle for something you can’t use while you’re basking in the sunlight near the beach? It’s time to upgrade.
